Oahu Blues is based on a photo, that I took at a nightclub in Honolulu, Oahu in 2009. It was at night and outdoors. The saxophonist's upper body was mostly in shadow and the lower part of the horn was blocked by the music stand. When I sketched the image on the canvas, I had to improvise the rest of the horn.
I liked the contrast between light and dark. I decided to make his clothing more colorful than in the photo. I used a splatter technique over most of the painting. Most of the splattered paint is blue and most of it is concentrated over the mouth of the horn. I wanted to give the impression that the blues was being blow out of the horn, thus the name, Oahu Blues.
