This is, Luke, my first digital pet portrait.
Digital Pet Portraits
I remember when I was a little girl in elementary school, we had a dog for a few days. One day Daddy came home in his pickup truck, opened the door and let this cute little Cocker Spaniel puppy out. The dog ran towards me and my sisters. We ran in every direction, screaming and trying to get away from it. I guess Daddy thought that his little girls would love to have a pet. It didn’t occur to him that we would be afraid. Daddy had to find another home for him. My sisters and I laugh every time we reminisce about that day.
People who know me and are familiar with my work and the subject matter in my artwork, want to know, “Why am I doing doggie portraits?” I think they were concerned that there was something wrong with me.
I think that my pet portraits are as equally a form of art as my other artwork. I have never wanted a pet. But I respect how pet owners feel about their animals. They consider them to be members of the family. If their pet dies, they mourn the loss. The owners love my portraits of their pets. And it makes me feel good to know that my artwork is appreciated and that I created something that made someone happy.
I have done six pet portraits. One was a watercolor. Two were gifts and the four that I did recently were commissions. Five of the portraits were digital paintings created using the Procreate App and Apple Pencil on my iPad Pro. Below are my four recent digital pet paintings.
