14th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition Sankofa

Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of the Akan tribe of Ghana. It refers to a proverb which states, "it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind". In other words, "don't forget your history". Sankofa also refers to two Asante Adinkra symbols - a stylized heart and a mythical bird. Artwork accepted into this exhibition had to include one of these symbols. In my acrylic painting, her earring is a stylized heart. The mythical bird sits on her shoulder, with its head turned backwards and its mouth holding a precious egg. Her dress and most of the bird is batik fabric.

This juried exhibition, which was postponed last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, features 41 artists who create artwork using fibers. It was organized by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department. It will be on display from April 28-June 25, 2021.  Click here for more information.
